Late one Saturday night I was riding Shorty home
What was that running in the middle of the road?
I touched my heel to Shorty’s side, he jumped and caught up
I bent forward for a better look and got a terrible shock.
It was a skunk and it made a good shot
It caught me on the right side from knee to foot
My new Bostonian slippers were covered with skunk
I almost cried—I had just paid $12 for them that day.
When I got to the house, I told Mom my story
She wanted to help and got out the soap and water
Then we poured on a bottle of cheap perfume
Honestly, I think it made the odor worse.
They were my only pair of shoes and I wore them to church next day
It caused a stir when I sat down in class
The boys got up and started a search
They looked high and low for an hour. I never opened my mouth.
