Dad was instructed to stick his neck out quite a few times this morning, and in return his neck was stuck quite a few times with some really long needles. The picture above is an example of some Head and Neck Center humor, and was hanging near the room where Dad has his voice analysis.
Dr. Jan Lewin and Dr. Michael Kupferman made injecting Dad’s left vocal cord with their special gel look no more complicated than an oil change on my truck. Dr. Lewen said it all when she asked, “Isn’t this cool?” It’s more than cool—it’s down-right amazing. What I did think was cool, was that I was allowed to observe the procedure.
Dad can’t make a peep until tomorrow morning. Talking will cause the gel to leak out the needle holes. He’s good at writing notes, but sometimes it takes me a few tries to comprehend the message. Dad handed me a note, and I read, “Dr. Lewin cave people.” Dad shook his head. “Dr. Lewin coves people?” He patiently outlined the third word. “Oh! Dr. Lewen loves people. Yes, she certainly does!”
The pictures of Dad’s beautiful larynx are a gift from Dr. Lewin. The gap between the cords (slender, white muscles) was much smaller after the gel injection.
