Last Wednesday, as Dad and I traveled north on I-45, I noticed a sign for Buffalo. Andrew’s part of the world! A short phone call later, and we were making our way toward Andrew’s work site, which was actually closer to Donie than Buffalo. “What kind of name is Donie anyway?” Dad asked.
It looks like it all started when the community was settled in the 1880s, closely followed by the establishment of Dewey Prairie Baptist Church in 1886. The residents applied for a post office, but someone misspelled the name on the application as Douie. Douie was misread as Donie, and the post office became Donie. The Dewey Prairie Baptist Church then changed their name to First Baptist Church of Donie. So, now the name of Donie causes people to scratch their heads and ask, “What kind of name is Donie?”
In case you’re looking for Donie it’s located in Freestone County on Highway 164 and FM 80:
11 miles South of Teague,
104 miles South of Dallas,
10 miles West of Buffalo,
19 miles East of Groesbeck
56 miles East of Waco,
with a population of about 200.
Here’s a picture of two of my favorite guys “on location,” near Donie.
